Snow Day

Posted In: Everyday life — January 12, 2005 @ 5:21 pm — Peter

I took a snow day today… This morning I let Iris out to go to the bathroom at about 5:15am, no snow. I leave for work at 7:00am and there is about 3 inches of snow on the ground. It was like a blizzard out there! I managed to get out of the driveway and slid onto 13th Ave. It took nearly 10 minutes to go 9 blocks to Colorado Blvd. When I got on Colorado Blvd, I noticed alot of traffic near the intersection of Colorado Blvd and Colfax. I figured some sort of accident happened so I decided to head back home rather than fight traffic and risk getting in a car accident. I am lucky to be an IT worker that can pretty much do my job from anywhere with a highspeed Internet connection. I fought for a while trying to configure my Java development environment on my home computers, but I kept getting some annoying version mismatch error. Frustrated with this, I decided to catch up on some of the documentation I am behind on. I churned out several pages and did some reading for a single-sign-on implementation I have coming up. Overall, a pretty productive day in my home office. To my amusement, emails were flying around about playing hockey on Friday. I thought the game would be off since it snowed, but Bob has volunteered to clear the ring. I think he is bluffing, but we’ll see. I’ll bring a shovel tomorrow incase he is serious!

My brother sent me this link today. I must say, I am quite excited about seeing this movie. Colfax Ave has been a mild obsession of my since we have moved here. This wonderful street is 4 blocks north of us and is everything I love about living in a city. Despite the regulars being hookers, the homeless, drug dealers, and every shady person in between, the street has a certain charm about it. We are lucky enough to live near the famous ‘East Colfax’, where several Ethiopian restaurants have setup shop. Stephanie and I got some carry out from one a few weeks ago and it was scrumptious. So, the movie is being shown in Februrary and we will get some presale tickets. The website indicates that the last showing was a huge success and nearly sold out. I definitely don’t want to be disappointed. To top off the evening, I will likely take the Colfax 15L bus. The theater it is showing at is not very far, if it were nicer out I would ride my bike.

Unfortunately, this is the month of the National Western Stock Show. This extravaganza of trash entertainment has been dragging the cretins of rural Colorado and surrounding states to Denver. Why do they have to hold this flagrant display of human arrogance in Denver. Can’t these cowboys drag their stupidity down to Texas… Anyway, there have been plenty of demonstrations going on outside the arena the show is being held in. I have thought about going, but it probably isn’t a good idea. I tend to get mouthy at demonstrations and would likely get beaten up by one of these neandertals. Thankfully there are people who can keep their cool and demonstrate peacefully. Looks like Peaceful Prairie has a vehicle that has been circling the arena with billboards of gross animal abuse from farms. I am thrilled they are working so hard to bring the voice of peace to such a violent event.

Time to make some pizza dough!
