Common Sense?

I am quite confused how this situation has panned out. Our neighbor came home this weekend and has done nothing to improve the security of her home after the break in that happened on Wednesday night. It would be quite trivial to install a few timers on the outside lights to provide minimal security to the area that was circumvented. I can see out my kitchen window right now, and the house is completely dark and it seems it will remain like this for the coming weeks until she is done with her military commitment. At this point, I feel her house poses a security threat to our home. When criminals consider a target, it is likely they consider the possibility that neighbors might see them. With our neighbor’s home being obviously unoccupied, it sends the signal to criminals that nobody is around to report a break in of our home. So, what are we left to do? Should we confront her about this next time she is home? Should we offer to stop into her house and toggle lights to give the appearance of someone home during the week? I think we have earned neighborly trust by reacting so vigilantly to the break in of her home. I would be more than willing to tend to the house on a daily basis and would prefer it to a dark insecure house drawing criminals… Anyway, this is quite frustrating and I hope something changes soon. Perhaps next weekend I will have a chat with her and see if we can settle on something. In the mean time, I’ll glance over there every hour of so to make sure nobody is taking advantage of the easy prey looming next door…

    Hi Pedro,

I haven’t check motyka.org for a couple of days and was surprised to see lots of new posting from you…..just so ya know, I enjoy the site very much. I sure can understand your concern about the house next door. If people would only understand that a thief’s worst enemy (after a barking dog) is LIGHT! Thieves simply do not want any light being shed on them while doing their dastardly deeds….till today neighbor Rick still does not light his house properly when he’s gone. I will admit that he has gotten security doors and kick-proof basement windows, but I wish he would just install a few motion detectors around his property - he still doesn’t get it. Dad and I are hoping this spring/summer that he will clean up his yard and get rid of the old wood piled up against his garage - in some ways I’m afraid if he disturbs the pile, it will unleash an army of carpenter ants or termites and that they will head straight for our house. People tend to think termites are “funny” - like little bugs are really going to eat a whole house????? Well, you wouldn’t believe the damage they have done to Claudia and Marc’s house - it will be very hard to sell that house because they will have to disclose that there is a termite problem that is out of control.

Not much else new here - it is snowing again - just a light dusting but enough to keep me and Dad from driving to the gym - we have to drive through too much dark, unlit roads to get there so home is where we’ll stay tonite.

Say hi to Stephanie and the fur-children for us.

    Love,
    Mom
