Etc…

I played with Jasc’s Animation Shop 3 and made something silly: .

Peter is at class tonight and won’t be home until 10:30, so I’m just hanging out at home entertaining myself with my lame attempts at graphics.

We enjoyed gorgeous weather this weekend, which was very much appreciated by all–especially Iris. We took her to the dog park, where she ran amok and charmed several dogs into following her wherever she went. The B*A*L*L was thrown until our arms gave out (her legs never did) and we headed home.

Before the dog park, we checked out the church we’ve been meaning to investigate. No, the godless heathens haven’t “seen the light”, the church is a Unitarian Universalist church. People of all faiths and of no faiths are welcome. We attended an orientation for prospective members before the sermon’s second seating. It was interesting. In lieu of religious hymns, folk songs, a tango song, and some new age-y kind of tunes. The place was a haven for liberals, it seemed. John Kerry bumperstickers were a mainstay in the parking lot. Paganists, Wiccas, Buddhists, Atheists, Christians, and Agnostics all in the same place…all searching for community, peace, acceptance, and their own truth.

There is no cramming of the J-man down throats, no judgemental folks looking down on you for living your life the way you feel is right, and no eternal damnation damnation for not being a theist. After we attend a few more Sundays, we intend on joining their Habitat For Humanity group, the Buddhist study group, the meditation group, and maybe the young couple’s group. Although we’ve been in Denver for over a year now, we still don’t know very many people and have no close friends locally. We figured that this would be a good way to meet people and to join an enclave of liberally minded folks hiding from the Focus On the Family/Bushy followers.

Well, Peter unexpectantly came home early! I want to cuddle, so I’m shutting up now.

Blog spam

Posted In: Everyday life — February 9, 2005 @ 10:28 pm — Peter

I setup a comment spam blocker tonight. Annoying online poker websites have been posting links to their websites as comments to our posts. This stupidity resulted in me having to spend time rebuilding PHP with FreeType support so I could add a code verification area to the comment form. I used Gudly’s plugin and it was pretty simple to setup. So, to those that comment on our blog, sorry for the extra typing this will result in. Hopefully it will stop the stupid spammers from getting content on our site.

I spent nearly 2 hours on the phone with Dell technical support today. A few months ago, my dual monitor adapter stop working on my office computer. I have been too busy/lazy to call support and have dealt with a single monitor for months. So, I rang the support folks and was connected with someone reading the typical support script and being excessively polite. After my first attempt at communicating my problem, he quickly said “You cannot connect two monitors to the graphics adapter”. I repeated myself, informing him that I specifically ordered a dual monitor capable card. He insisted, only one monitor was supported. He put me on hold as he did some research since I refused to accept his answer. I also did some research and found the manual for the card on Dell’s website. After the support rep came back from placing me on hold, I asked him for his email address. I forwarded him the email that states the graphics card was dual monitor capable.

“…you can select any combination of multiple displays, including digital flat panels, analog CRTs, and TVs and also modify the display properties using an intuitive software user interface.”

Even after seeing the above statement directly from the manual from Dell’s website, he insisted on not being able to connect both a LCD and CRT monitor to this card. Also, he said I was reading this statement incorrectly and that the only other device I could use for output would be a television. Heh, I could see that on my desk.. a nice 30 inch TV next to my LCD. I decided to try explaining this again, speaking very slowly since the person seemed dense and unable to understand the concept of dual displays…. He refused to accept that what I was experiencing was a problem, however, agreed to send me a replacement card. I was somewhat annoyed by this… Although I was having a new graphics card mailed to me next day air, I still wanted him to admit he was wrong. Anyway, I could not imagine dealing with these fools on a daily basis. I have much respect for people who have to call Dell support on a regular basis.

Oh, I almost forgot… A fellow geek cruiser sent me a video clip of us walking along the beach in St. Maarten… The clip is roughly 3MB, 11 seconds long… Thanks for sending it Chris!

Movin’ along…

Today I wrapped up a few lose ends at work and planed my week. I’ll be digging into JMeter to put together a performance test of a web banking system. I’ll need to configure a few remote drone testing nodes to help distribute the load. My week is rather crowded with meetings and such. I’ll be discussing some single sign on issues with the team and hopefully flesh out a disaster recovery document that has been on the back burner for a while.

Tonight I had class and we were dismissed early. To my surprise, the article presentation was not due today, but I volunteered to give mine while the topic was fresh in my head. I think the presentation went very well. I spoke naturally and didn’t require notes. I figure not needing notes was a sign that I was comfortable speaking about the topic and showed I really understood the material. I learned alot from the assignment and my peers asked some good questions after I wrapped up. I tried to use the ToastTimer PocketPC program to time myself, but my device went into sleepmode and the clock stopped ticking. I’ll need to remember this for the final presentation so I can pace myself better. So, I’ve cleared up my academic todo list so I can concentrate on the final project. I started putting together some notes, but have yet to meet with management at work to get some answers to a few of the questions I can’t answer myself. The assignment is an IT inventory of our employer, documenting types of information systems, operating systems and security polices.

Steer Madness!

Posted In: Everyday life — February 5, 2005 @ 7:12 pm — Peter

This is so neat! A video game in which the objective is to rescue animals! My laptop barely meets the minimum system requirements and may be lacking a bit on video ram… Perhaps I will support the company and give it a try, it looks like alot of fun! Check out the trailer.

A Cow On A Mission!
Bryce is a cow on a mission to save the animals! Join him on his adventures as he rescues rabbits, delivers soymilk, protests against fur, changes advertisements, and much, much more!

This morning I got caught up on alot of chores and such. Afterwards we hiked out to Aurora to get a few extra dining placemats and stopped at Oldnavy too. Stephanie saw a commercial advertising fleeces for ten bucks, but the store we went to was fresh out of stock. We then came to pickup Iris and take her to the dog park. I gave in to her ball obsession and bought her a Chuck It. She is so in love with it! Finally we can toss the ball sufficiently far and for a long enough duration of time to keep her happy. Despite playing ball for over an hour, we came home and she headed to the yard for some more. The dog is insane!

This past week we had our final security door installed. Thanks to a hefty tax refund, we were able to afford to have the front security door installed. Here it is, outside view and inside view

Tonight I will be working on some homework. First the required textbook reading and end of chapter case study questions, then something a bit more interesting. Our professor gave us an assignment to write up a short paper and give a presentation on an article of our choice. I chose to write about Folksonomies, a concept implemented on furl.net and del.icio.us. Also know as tagging and social bookmarks, this has definitely caught my interest and provides a useful mechanism for organizing information.
