New Cat

Posted In: Everyday life — May 2, 2005 @ 10:43 pm — Peter

My brother has recently adopted a new cat, he is aptly named “New Cat”. I hope he names him something else soon, but it seems like “New Cat” has stuck amongst Brian and his friends. New Cat is a white and gray male cat that is young and very active. While I was over there, New Cat was running around the house and playing with anything that dangled relatively low. I snapped a few shots of New Cat and Brian’s other cat Daphne a few weekends ago. The photos are here.

Today grades were posted for the the last semester. My prediction was right and I ended up with an A-. With this class done, I am now 1/4 of the way done with my graduate degree! Next class… Intro to Enterprise Information Assurance, an elective that will contribute to the graduate certificate I’m working towards.

Spring cleaning

Posted In: Everyday life — @ 7:49 am — Peter

This weekend I took up some spring-cleaning efforts to help spruce up our house. We were somewhat housebound for most of the weekend since it rained/snowed steadily all weekend. To make good use of the inside time we had available to us, I started reorganizing our closets/cabinets. We have a modestly sized house and effective space usage is important to avoid feeling cramped. I’ve yet to determine what the optimal configuration is for longterm, shorterm, and frequent access storage. Perhaps there are books written on this type of thing? What we want to accomplish is, not cluttering up our most accessible storage spaces with items that are seasonal or infrequently used items. Anyone have advice on this issue?

Along the same lines, I am crawling through our gigabytes of data trying to organize our networked file space. I would really like to downsize the amount of computers we have running in our home and I think I can consolidate all the services we depend on to our Linux server. The only service I’m worried about is networked printing. While LinuxPrinting.org suggests our printer will work fine using Hewlett Packard drivers, I’ve never had luck with printing under Linux in the past. The most monumental task will be sorting through digital photographs. Our current organization system consists of dated folders, the date being the date I transferred the photos off of the camera. Needless to say, this has done little to help us organize our photos and we now have nearly 4gb of images to sort through. I’ll likely continue to use Picasa. The ultimate goal is to have our photos better organized for more timely posting to our photo gallery. We have still yet to retouch and share pictures from our Europe backpacking trip….
