Goodbye BorisPosted In: Everyday life — May 5, 2005 @ 3:56 pm — PeterThis weekend I will be phasing out one of our network servers at home in effort to de-clutter our office. For some reason I have felt the need to keep a Windows 2000 Advanced Server system up and running for the past year or so. Initially I intended to experiment with some ASP.NET web application development in my free time, but I never got around to that. Anyway, when I have free time I rather put effort into enhancing motyka.org, which is PHP-based. So, the server named Boris will no longer store files and print pages for us. These services have been migrated over to our Linux server, the same system powering this website. To my surprise, setting up the printer sharing was quite easy. Last time I attempted printing via Linux was an ordeal. This time around, I had our Brother HL-5040 printer working with CUPS in a few minutes and networked via Samba in a couple more. The last step will be tearing out the 120GB hard drive from Boris and stashing it in the Linux server. This downsizing should help clean up the cable mess that currently lives behind our desk and potentially reduce the hum that can be heard around the house. I guess it will reduce our energy usage too, but not much… |
