Doggie CamPosted In: Everyday life — June 29, 2005 @ 7:50 am — PeterIris is at City Bark doggie day care center today. We felt it would be best for her to get some social time while Stephanie heads to Garden of the Gods with Bev, Bill, and Sharon. City Bark has web cameras mounted in all their play rooms that allow obsessed owners to spy on their pooches as they play. Here is a snapshot of Iris dashing around playroom 1.
I think Iris and the tan colored dog to the left are at odds. I’ve seen them wrestle and bark at each other a bit. I hope she makes some new friends!
Baby clothesPosted In: Everyday life — June 23, 2005 @ 3:25 pm — StephanieLet me state for the record that I absolutely LOATHE most of the clothes out there available for babies. It’s either sickeningly sweet, ooey-gooey frothy pink crap or sports, cars, and Disney. Ugh. Finding cute girl clothes without being saccharine and diabetic coma-causing is tricky, but it can be done. Finding something for a boy that isn’t promoting baby’s future as a sports star of some kind is nearly impossible. It’s either sports, cars and trucks, or the standard boring fare of polo type shirt with khakis. The best I can find has animals on it–not Disney or off some TV show–just animals. I’ll admit to purchasing a gently used Colorado Avalanche onesie, but when my child wears it (girl or boy, btw), it’s just one onesie not the entire wardrobe. A trip to a baby clothing store shows that what seems like 90% of the boys clothing is sports-related. A trip to the girls department reveals nary a single piece with sports insignia and glows with a rosy pink. Let’s draw the gender line in the sand before they are old enough to hold their heads up, people. Boys.must.like.sports.cars.and.want.to.be.firemen! Girls.must.be.pretty.pink.sparkly.faeries.with.no.interests! Peter is even pickier about clothes than I am. He has only a certain set of colors that he will wear, and extends this preference towards baby clothes. He’s a fan of boring things, while I like fun, happy, bright clothes. I do have to say that the two lone outfits he’s picked out for the baby are among my favorites thus far. Of course, he picked it out as an example of something I’d like. As far as girls clothes go, I can tolerate them more. Although the department is mostly baby pink and lacy stuff, there is hope! I’ve found orange/hot pink stuff, blues, greens, reds, and yellows that I became smitten with. Unisex clothing is extremely hard to come by, even for newborns. In related news, I’m pretty sure I’ve found the outfit I will be taking baby home from the hospital in. It’s white and knitted. I intend on saving it in case zie wants to bring his or her baby home in it–or if she or he just wants to see how tiny zie once was. ***Pregnancy Update I’m 17 weeks along today and things seem to be going well. I have an appointment tomorrow to go over the blood test from last week. I’m trying not to get nervous about it, but that can’t be helped. Not really. My nausea is still there, although greatly reduced. No vomiting in nearly 3 weeks, which has been such a relief. While my belly is starting to round out more, I still don’t fit into maternity clothes. Most of my regular clothes aren’t fitting well anymore, with the exception of one pair of jeans and three t-shirts. I’ve managed to make a pair of maternity shorts stay up with the aid of a belt. Maternity clothes seem to be made for people who are 7+ months pregnant. What about the rest of us? Peter and I are getting more and more excited each day. At least once a day, Peter will turn to me and say, “You’re pregnant!” Or, “There’s a baby in there!” This leaves us in a giggle fit that lasts several minutes and usually ends with him talking into my navel, “Hellloooo, baby!!” I’ve been feeling our little grasshopper squirming around in there sometimes when I lie down at night to read. It will be a few weeks yet, I suppose, before we feel anything from the outside. I still look like I indulged a bit too much lately rather than looking pregnant, so feeling the baby moving around is a nice little secret. Well, I’ve got laundry to finish.
Countdown…Posted In: Everyday life — June 17, 2005 @ 12:16 pm — Stephanie
Study confirms red meat link with bowel cancerPosted In: Everyday life — June 16, 2005 @ 7:06 am — Peterhttp://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?&storyID=8795932 Here is yet another article proving the case for vegetarianism. I’m happy to know that colorectal cancer is another ailment I can spend less time worrying about when I get older. With the abundance of material out there revealing the risks of meat consumption, why do people still eat it? At this point, it seems just as risk as smoking. I can’t help but notice the lack of U.S.-based media coverage on this story. Ah, the classic tactic of conveniently ignoring important information to keep the population content. Perhaps some more stories on Michael Jackson or other mindless pap took precedence. What does the WHO know anyway…
Fun in the sunPosted In: Everyday life — June 13, 2005 @ 10:17 pm — PeterThis past weekend Stephanie and I managed to squeeze in a day of gardening and finished up right before a storm front moved in. Although our last attempt at a vegetable gardening didn’t work out so well, we decided to give it another try. We laid things out differently this time, planting everything south of the garage roof overhang. I have no idea why we planted things under there last season. It seems anything planted there would get very little water when it rains and would retain little water since the ground is on a small slope. This time around we planted tomatoes, cucumbers, green bell peppers, brussel sprouts, kale, basil, watermelon, and rhubard and chives returned from a previous planting. Here is a picture of our newly planted garden patch. After wrapping up the veggies, we planted some flowers. The front of our house looks a bit bare, so we planted some gerbera daisies. We hope they spread a bit and add a splash of color. From what I’ve read so far, they won’t last the winter. I’m not exactly sure where we will keep them if we have to dig them up and store them in pots… I’ll have to solicit the advice of a few green thumbs at work and see if they have any strategies for keeping these little guys warm through the cold season. They didn’t show up very well in the photos, but here they are anyway… [pic1] [pic2] And… I could not resist taking a picture of these guys! Aren’t they lovely?!? « Previous Entries |
