Baby clothes

Let me state for the record that I absolutely LOATHE most of the clothes out there available for babies. It’s either sickeningly sweet, ooey-gooey frothy pink crap or sports, cars, and Disney. Ugh. Finding cute girl clothes without being saccharine and diabetic coma-causing is tricky, but it can be done. Finding something for a boy that isn’t promoting baby’s future as a sports star of some kind is nearly impossible. It’s either sports, cars and trucks, or the standard boring fare of polo type shirt with khakis. The best I can find has animals on it–not Disney or off some TV show–just animals. I’ll admit to purchasing a gently used Colorado Avalanche onesie, but when my child wears it (girl or boy, btw), it’s just one onesie not the entire wardrobe. A trip to a baby clothing store shows that what seems like 90% of the boys clothing is sports-related. A trip to the girls department reveals nary a single piece with sports insignia and glows with a rosy pink. Let’s draw the gender line in the sand before they are old enough to hold their heads up, people. Boys.must.like.sports.cars.and.want.to.be.firemen! Girls.must.be.pretty.pink.sparkly.faeries.with.no.interests! Peter is even pickier about clothes than I am. He has only a certain set of colors that he will wear, and extends this preference towards baby clothes. He’s a fan of boring things, while I like fun, happy, bright clothes. I do have to say that the two lone outfits he’s picked out for the baby are among my favorites thus far. Of course, he picked it out as an example of something I’d like.

As far as girls clothes go, I can tolerate them more. Although the department is mostly baby pink and lacy stuff, there is hope! I’ve found orange/hot pink stuff, blues, greens, reds, and yellows that I became smitten with. Unisex clothing is extremely hard to come by, even for newborns.

In related news, I’m pretty sure I’ve found the outfit I will be taking baby home from the hospital in. It’s white and knitted. I intend on saving it in case zie wants to bring his or her baby home in it–or if she or he just wants to see how tiny zie once was. :)

***Pregnancy Update

I’m 17 weeks along today and things seem to be going well. I have an appointment tomorrow to go over the blood test from last week. I’m trying not to get nervous about it, but that can’t be helped. Not really. My nausea is still there, although greatly reduced. No vomiting in nearly 3 weeks, which has been such a relief. While my belly is starting to round out more, I still don’t fit into maternity clothes. Most of my regular clothes aren’t fitting well anymore, with the exception of one pair of jeans and three t-shirts. I’ve managed to make a pair of maternity shorts stay up with the aid of a belt. Maternity clothes seem to be made for people who are 7+ months pregnant. What about the rest of us?

Peter and I are getting more and more excited each day. At least once a day, Peter will turn to me and say, “You’re pregnant!” Or, “There’s a baby in there!” This leaves us in a giggle fit that lasts several minutes and usually ends with him talking into my navel, “Hellloooo, baby!!”

I’ve been feeling our little grasshopper squirming around in there sometimes when I lie down at night to read. It will be a few weeks yet, I suppose, before we feel anything from the outside. I still look like I indulged a bit too much lately rather than looking pregnant, so feeling the baby moving around is a nice little secret.

Well, I’ve got laundry to finish.
