It’s a GIRL!!!Posted In: Everyday life — July 16, 2005 @ 10:58 am — StephaniePeter and I are going to have a daughter!!! We had our 20 week ultrasound yesterday, and couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. It was fun calling everybody and hearing them scream into the phone. My mom told me all along that it was a girl and that I didn’t have to bother with boy names. She’s happy because now she’ll have two grandsons and two granddaughters. Mrs. M is equally–no, probably insanely–thrilled with the idea of having a girl in the family. She actually called us later to ask if it were really true. : ) The ultrasound itself went very well. The ultrasound tech carefully examined every inch of the baby. She is six inches long from crown to rump and there is an extra three or so for legs. We think we have a boxer inside, because she kept her little hands in fists and pummeled the placenta. Peter was amazed that I didn’t feel it. Her spine looked good and according to the U/S tech, her brain looked “beautiful”. Peter was particularly happy to hear that. He already has evil plans to turn our little girl into a computer geek. The heartbeat was strong and neat to see on the ultrasound. Peter and I were staring at the screen in awe. We looked at each other, and, at that moment, I don’t think I’ve ever loved him more. /mushy grossness The only piece of news that wasn’t quite good was that the tip of the placenta is lying low, close to the cervix. This means I get an additional ultrasound at 34 weeks, but it also means I’m a potential candidate for a c-section. I was hoping for a low-intervention birth, so this is really frightening for me. There is still a good chance of it moving up out of the way, but I have to prepare myself for the possibility of a cesarian. Without further ado, here is our darling little girl– That one is my favorite, because the profile shot of the face is pretty clear. The rest of the ultrasound photos are located in the Baby Girl Motyka photo gallery. There is one there from 8 weeks. You can see how much she’s grown in the last 12 weeks! http://motyka.org/gallery/album.php?id=27
Schoooools out for summer!Posted In: Everyday life — July 11, 2005 @ 12:08 pm — PeterAs of July 3rd, I’ve been relieved of my academic duties until next term. I’m taking some time off to work with Stephanie in converting our home office to baby’s nursery. I’m quite excited about the project! I never used the office very much as I’m fonder of working via laptop from random parts of the house, including outside. Transforming this room into usable space will be like discovering this room all over again. We have some tentative plans for decorating, but nothing definitive yet. First we must purge all office type items and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. I’m working on moving our motyka.org web server from a desk in this room to a vacant space in the entertainment cabinet in our living room. For this to work, we’ll have to acquire a VGA scan converter so the television can be used as a monitor. I’ll be stalking eBay for the weeks to come and hopefully find a deal on such a gizmo. This past weekend we managed to get quite a bit of work done and have some fun too. We took a trip out to Boulder on Saturday, had dinner at the Boulder Vegetarian Coop, and wandered around the Pearl Street Mall. The same evening, we watched the second installment of the latest Spiderman movie series. We were inspired to see these movies after receiving a gift from a coworker of mine. She wrapped the “Baby Signs” book in Spiderman paper and this reminded us that we have yet to see the movies. It was a very Spiderman weekend at our house as we watched both films Friday and Saturday night. While they weren’t cinematographically brilliant, they were fun, action packed, and topped with plenty of pleasantly cheesy romance scenes. I read a few Spiderman comics when I was younger, so it was fun throwback to my comic reading years. On Sunday I joined my brother for an afternoon with a few of his friends. This group has an interesting dynamic. The first hour or so of conversation is full of embedded insults being slung back and forth with the occasion roar for a particularly clever “burn”. An example of such, I was “burned” when talking about the Tori Amos concert Stephanie and I will be attending at Red Rocks. I was told in addition to the ticket price, I’d have to hand my scrotum in at the door since I’d be the only man attending the event. An interesting group I must say, it’s likely the same sort of banter goes on in the ape house at the Denver Zoo I’ll end this post with some gloating… I scored yet another ‘A’ in the Regis MSCIT program!
Iris the TigerPosted In: Everyday life — July 5, 2005 @ 10:28 pm — PeterStephanie, Iris, and I decided to take a trip to Chatfield State Park on Independence Day. It was a beautiful day, albeit a bit hot. Iris was very well behaved off-leash and didn’t stray from us once. She also had a great time diving into the reservoir to fetch her beloved tennis ball. I tested out the video capture feature of our new digital camera and caught this little clip of Iris fetching her ball. I did some retouching for a dramatic effect. Click the link below to view the video, select open when prompted. Sorry non-Windows users… The video is in Windows Media format as I could not find a free utility to convert it to MPEG. Feel free to leave a comment if you know of such a tool. P.S. Make sure your speakers are turned up a bit iristhetiger.wmv [1.9MB]
Next year…Posted In: Everyday life — @ 2:44 am — Stephanie…will be so different. Our lives are going to change so drastically! For a good many years, my life will be lived around the needs of this one little person. Peter and I have tried to imagine what it would be like, but I really don’t think there’s any way to prepare yourself for it. You go to the hospital, have the baby, and they just let you go home with him/her. Just like that. There’s no baby interpreter to help you identify the meanings of each shrill cry or each fussy movement. Peter and I finally made our first larger baby purchase, a car seat, and are still nervous about our decision. It’s a Britax Roundabout, and has received mostly excellent reviews from the online sources we’ve found. Hopefully, we’ve chosen well. I’m also excited about joining a Baby Sign Language class when baby is of age. I’ve located a company close to our home that offers group classes. Time for this mama to get some sleep.
Beached WhalePosted In: Everyday life — July 3, 2005 @ 11:54 am — StephaniePeter called me a beached whale today. Oh, it was in jest and was meant to be taken “playfully”. I want to cheerfully strangle him right now and he has a lot of arse kissing to do now. I’m not that freaking big. I still fit into my regular jeans. Bastard. Actually, with his “sympathy weight”, he looks like he may be due a month ahead of me. He just apologized to me…for not having a sense of humor! I want to KILL him! I may poison his tea tonight. Grrrrrr….. « Previous Entries |
