veinte seis años

I’ve been pretty busy lately and not found time to put a post together until this lovely holiday morning. It will be tough to summarize what has went on over the past few weeks. Most notable, I’m now 26 years old. My Dad came to Denver for a weekend visit and we had a great time hangin’ around the house and doing stuff around the city. The Chicago Cubs were in town that weekend, so we went to see them play. It was amusing to see more Cubs apparel than Rockies. Also, more people were cheering for the Cubs too! Despite the support of the Chicago fans, the Cubs lost to one of the worst baseball teams in the league. Dad and I also played a few games of chess on the boards at the 16th street mall. He stayed at a the Oxford House in Lodo which has a prime location near the best spots of downtown.

I didn’t get as my pictures as I would have liked, but here are a few…

Note, I even had a birthday cake! :D Stephanie got it from the wonderful bakery at WaterCourse Foods

My new job is going very well. I’ve been tasked with quite a few projects and am working extremely hard to meet deadlines. Tomorrow is going to be intense as I have to start wrapping up several things that will be due on Friday. As far as not having to commute 10+ miles to work everyday, I love it! I’ve been taking the lovely Colfax 15 everyday and largely avoiding the spike in gas prices that has occurred over the past few days. While the commute is not much shorter time wise (the bus stops a hell of alot), I have time to read, listen to podcasts, and daydream. It has been fun strolling around the 16th street mall on lunch breaks too.

This past Saturday I attended a coworkers wedding and it was absolutely beautiful. The ceremony was held at a golf course outside Roxborough state park and the setting was picture perfect. The weather almost took the ceremony inside, but thankfully the strong winds and drizzle subsided. I don’t know why I didn’t take my camera with me. I would have loved to get a few pictures of Eric and Jennifer exchanging their vows with the stunning jagged red rocks in the distance. I attended the wedding with another former coworker and we had a great time talking about everything going on in each others lives. Thanks for bringing me along Maureen, and thank you Eric and Jennifer for ensuring there was a vegetarian meal for me to eat!

Last night Stephanie and I headed over to Aunt Barb’s house for an impromptu visit. The conversation was full of graphic descriptions of various birthing processes and breast feeding horror stories. Despite the context of the conversation, us guys hung in there. I got a chance to cruise around on the Vespa, which is currently for sale. The one issue I have is, the scooter was “crashed” a few weeks ago. From what I can tell, the extent of the damage is surface scratches and nothing appears to be structurally wrong with the bike. The steering was normal and the engine sounds fine. From observing the age of Vespas I’ve seen around Denver, they are rugged little machines and hold up well. I’m going to get on the fast track to selling my old Toyota and then use the money to buy this little guy. Perhaps I’ll post to some Vespa forums to see what other owners have to say about a bike that has been crashed.

Well, I think that about summarizes the last month or so in a nutshell. I’ve got quite a few pictures from the past waiting in queue to get posted. Stephanie has sorted and cropped pictures from our Europe trip, assorted cat photos, and other pictures from family visits. Stay tuned for the updates!

MY life…

Posted In: Everyday life — September 3, 2005 @ 6:31 pm — Stephanie

I wish I could get away for a few weeks and spend time alone or with people who care about ME. It seems like I can talk and talk and nobody listens. I took some belly shots to show off my beautiful daughter growing in my belly, but I won’t be posting them here. At least I have control over that.

Gifts and March

My sister, Melissa, sent the baby a box of cute baby things along with a sweet card. Such a lovely surprise. Thanks, Melissa! As I’ve said before, I’m a little sad that my daughter won’t have cousins her age, but hopefully, David, Destiny, and Cameron will let her tag along once in awhile when we visit. I’m looking forward to everyone meeting my baby girl when we visit in March. We’ll only be able to come out for a short weekend, most likely, but I want to make sure everyone gets a chance to meet her. I’m really excited that my daughter will meet the most important woman in my life–my Grandma! My best childhood memories involve her in some way, so we’re going to spending a lot of time with Grandma when we visit.

We’re planning a “Meet and Greet” for that weekend we visit Chicago. I’m having fun planning it, and baby ****** won’t have to be dragged around from house to house this way. Instead, she can just hang out in one place while everyone takes a peek and/or holds her. Since we’ll never live in Chicago again, these visits and visits out to us will be the only way anyone will know my daughter. I may come out with in the summer and stay with Autumn for a week. I’d like to camp at the Dunes somewhere so we can all swim and have fun.

On the subject of swimming, I’m really looking forward to taking a mommy n’ me swim class. Since Peter doesn’t know how to swim well or even float (I’ve seen him nearly drown on one occasion), it’s become vitally important to me that my daughter become a decent swimmer. We’re planning on moving to be around the ocean in the next few years, so knowing how to swim is an absolute necessity.

We’re also amassing a huge library of books with messages that agree with our values and beliefs. Reading was one of my first loves in life, and I want to share that with my daughter. A lot of people don’t understand how important reading is for children and prefer to sit them in front of the TV. Watching Peter struggle to finish books really drives this point home. He says he spent a lot more time in front of the tube than with a nose in a book as a child, so we’re probably going to lock up the TV cabinet. There’s nothing but junk on there, and it’s too tempting when it looms as the center of the living room. Instead, we’ll play, read, spend time outside, and have quality family time. I want her to have an active lifestyle, as she comes from two largely sedentary families. Having an active childhood will hopefully set her up for a healthy lifestyle well into adulthood.

This motherhood thing is pretty overwhelming, but I get more and more excited about it every day. I wonder who she’ll look like more. Will she have Peter’s thick, pretty hair and my small frame? Or will she have Peter’s stocky body and my thin, fine hair that drives me insane on a daily basis? Peter and I both have green eyes and brown hair, so I’m guessing she’ll also have green eyes and brown hair. We’ll all look alike and spook people out! :) If she looks like a carbon copy of me, Peter’s done for.

Well, time for me to scrounge up some lunch. Miss ****** is probably wondering what the deal is. It’s so weird to have someone INSIDE of my body. I’ll never be as close to another person as I am right now.
