The nursery

Posted In: Amelia — October 22, 2005 @ 8:06 am — Peter

Another weekend is here… I simply can’t believe how fast time is flying by. It feels like I just started my new job, instead, I’ve been working there for two months or so. Even more shocking, I’m going to be a father in a little over five weeks! We have a lot to get done before our little bean arrives. One item we can cross off the list is nursery furniture. The beautiful set that my parents bought for us finally arrived earlier this week. We couldn’t wait to get it setup and assembled it that night. Thankfully, my brother was not too far away and stopped by to help me mount the hutch on the dresser. There remains a few items to take care of in the nursery, such as: window treatments, light switch cover, and a rug. We already have the light switch cover, we just need to obtain some hardware to mount it properly to the wall. As far as window treatments go, the valances are in the mail along with the white eyelet lace crib bedding set, and we are looking at plantation shutters for the lower portion of the window. Anyway, enough details about the nursery. Here are a few pictures of what the setup looks like so far.

Unfortunately the drawer on the crib came cracked. I’ve called the store and they put an order in for a new one. I’m hoping it won’t take 6 weeks to arrive…

I can’t believe how fast time is passing by! Hopefully it keeps on like this, because I’m VERY uncomfortable.

Latest news:

*The nursery furniture was finally delivered today–yay!
*Peter is wonderful
*I changed providers to a midwifery group based in Littleton and I have my first real appt with them tomorrow afternoon.
*We have chosen the hospital we will be delivering at
*We meet with our doula, Elizabeth, soon to go over things re: the birth
*I finally have a stupid driver’s license again!!!
*I miss my grandma (who, incidentally, never had a driver’s license)
*Avs play the LA Kings tomorrow night—GO AVS!
*The weather is crazy in Denver. It did snow last week…right??? *looks out at a 75 degree day*
*We’ve chosen the venue for the naming party in March–Lake Katherine’s in Palos Heights, IL. Now we just need to apply for permission to use it and all that jazz.

*My back hurts. It feels broken. Peter has taken to sleeping with his knees pressed into my spine to give it some support. I hate lying on my left side!!! I wish I could have him cuddle up behind me, but his heavy breathing disturbs me too much. Lately, he’s taken up snoring as well, which I assume he’s done just to annoy me. ;)

Daddy Boot Camp

Posted In: Amelia, Everyday life — October 14, 2005 @ 6:27 am — Peter

This Saturday I’ll be spending half the day in Daddy Boot Camp. This session was recommended to me by a fellow first time Dad in the neighborhood. Unlike the last class we took, this one is being held at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center (PSL), another hospital within a couple miles of our home. I’m excited about meeting fellow clueless Dads-to-be and hoping to learn some vital secrets that will help keep baby happy.

Class Description

Despite the frigid weather we’ve been having, I decided to ride the Vespa to work today. I bundled up with my North Face thermal liner, scarf, and gloves and had an overall comfortable ride. Temperature? 45 degrees. Perhaps I’ll get some more use out of that little scooter yet.

Its official, I’ve reached the halfway mark of iPods capacity. It is now sporting 2199 songs with 10.8GB remaining. After a few more mp3 dumps from a new friend, I’ll likely reach the 30GB capacity and have to clean off tracks that I hardly listen to. This reminds me, Apple has announced some new toys in the iPod arena. It appears they saw a market for video on this tiny handheld device. Personally, I have no desire to watch video on my iPod. It plays and organizes volumes of music and it does that very well. Don’t over complicate a simple and efficient device. I wish the news from Apple this week was an x86-based iBook. Now that would have been eventful.

Tonight is an Avs night so I’ll be planning on getting little to nothing done after getting home from work. I’d like to tweak Quicken a bit more, but I need to wait for data to accumulate as the banking interface from our bank only provides two weeks of history. I could manually import via another method, but that is troublesome. So far, the pie chart indicates that we spend way too much on dining out! Once I have more concrete evidence of this I’ll share our high level spending habits with our devout internet fans.

been a while

Posted In: Everyday life — October 12, 2005 @ 4:39 am — Peter

It sure has been a long time since I’ve taken time to post to this lovely website I’ve spent so much time building. We’ve been up to quite a bit lately and have some great stories to share. Following our wonderful date to the symphony, Stephanie and I went to see Seinfeld at the Bulle Theater last weekend. I’ve wanted to see Seinfeld perform stand up for sometime now, but have never had any luck obtaining tickets or being able to afford it. While it wasn’t exactly inexpensive to see his performance, it sure was worth every penny. Jerry did his usual routine of picking out idiosyncrasies of American English and nit picking at human behavior until it was evident that we are ridiculous creatures. He also dipped into his recent experiences of getting married and having children. This of course hit close to home for me and made me laugh until my stomach hurt!

Baby is almost here and I’m remaining surprisingly calm. I’m not sure when panic will set in, perhaps when labor starts? I guess I feel fairly well prepared with the amount of reading and research I’ve done. Although it has not been very much research/reading, I feel ready for the challenges that are ahead. One more parenting class remains. I’m thinking of the ‘Daddy Bootcamp’ that covers the basics of diaper changing, calming screaming baby, etc. Oh, look at that… the class starts on October 15th. I better register!

We finished painting the nursery! Stephanie did 90% of the work and kept the project going despite my efforts to find ten thousand another things to do simply to avoid the arduous task of stencil painting. It wasn’t the painting that was so bad, it was cleaning the flimsy plastic stencil punch-outs after each application of paint. Anyway, it is done and we are thrilled. Pictures will be posted soon!

Hockey season is underway and the Colorado Avalanche are showing signs of a pretty good season. Despite only playing a few games, I’m impressed with what I’ve seen so far. Their first home game against the Calgary Flames was a scoring fest that ended with rookie Svatos getting a hat trick. It was nice to see the younger players be the stars of the game instead of the senior members. Who knows, the Avs might have it in them this year to make it to the cup, especially under new management. I doubt we’ll make it out to see many games this season. Brian was nice enough to pass along some great pre-season tickets a couple weeks ago. Unless he scores some more tickets, we’ll likely be watching games from our cozy couch :)

Other things on my plate involve winterizing our house (yes, winter is right around the corner and we’ve had our first snowfall already…), putting in some extra hours at work, reading the Baby Signs book, and organizing our finances with Quicken. I think I’ve demystified transaction downloads with Quicken and our bank. It appears I have to enroll in something for it to work. Hopefully this won’t cost extra… I’m scared to see the average amount of money we spend dining out per month… *gulp*

Neat

Yesterday, Peter and I were taking pictures of my belly and Vinnie was hanging out, watching curiously. I stood next to him and suddenly he reached up a paw and touched my belly with it. Luckily, Peter got the shot, otherwise nobody would have believed it happened! :)

32 Weeks, 5 days!
