Finally rode a Segway!

Posted In: Travel, Everyday life — July 19, 2008 @ 11:02 pm — Peter

I recall all the hype around the “revolutionary” Segway personal transport device prior to its release. Riding one has always been on my todo list, but the opportunity has never come up. Today at the Royal Gorge Bridge, there was a guy with a collection of 5 or so Segways. For the small fee of $5 bucks, you get a brief lesson and time to zip around the patio area of the park. Yippe! It was a blast!

Don’t gamble with Colorado weather

Posted In: Everyday life — April 17, 2008 @ 10:29 pm — Peter

On Tuesday, the high temperature was in the low 80’s. Bright sunshine, nice breeze, spring was in the air. Wednesday morning, I watched the 6am news while eating breakfast. The forecast called for huge temperature drops and a chance of snow in the PM. How could we get snow after an 80 degree day, no way… I decided to ride my scooter to work despite the forecast.

The snow started falling around 3:30, but it was not cold enough for it to accumulate. Without any accumulation, it seemed possible to ride my scooter home, dumb idea It was a intensely painful ride. The visor broke off my helmet weeks after buying it, so I was riding into snow at 35mph with bare skin. I considered ditching my scooter at York & Colfax and catching the bus, but decided to press on. The rest of the ride was tolerable, my face went numb and I managed to clean the snow off my sunglasses at traffic lights.

Here is a photo of me a couple minutes after getting home:

Ping Cap Day

Posted In: Everyday life — April 11, 2008 @ 10:02 am — Peter

It is cap day at Ping. What is cap day you ask?

Here’s how CapDay will work:

1. Three different prizes will be given out.

2. At three random times throughout the day, a name will be drawn from a hat. If that
person is present and has a cap on, they get the prize for that particular drawing.
If not, then another name is drawn.

3. The prizes step up in size with each being bigger than the earlier one.

4. Time range of random drawings: 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

Last night I discovered, I don’t have a cap. I stopped wearing caps at some point in high school or college. My plan was to get out last night to get a Colorado Avalanche hat, but the mall closed at 9pm.

Thankfully, a thoughtful coworker thought of me and brought me a cap!

Don’t worry, I’ve not become a Red Wings fan overnight, I’m still loyal Avalanche fan! I was, however, a fan of the Red Wings in grade school. It hasn’t been since Steve Yzerman, Sergei Federov, Nicklas Lidstom, and Tim Cheveldae dominated the ice that I’ve been a fan. I made the mistake of admitting this during my first job interview in Denver. Being that I stopped following hockey for several years, I was unaware of the huge rivalry that had developed between the Avalanche and Red Wings. I wonder why I didn’t get offered that job :P

First Day of School!

Posted In: Amelia, Academic, Everyday life — April 7, 2008 @ 11:49 pm — Stephanie

Today marked yet another milestone Amelia has reached–her first day of school and her first time ever left with someone who isn’t family. Although her school is walking distance from our house, policy for the first week dictates we drive so that we have a quick exit in case there is separation anxiety. And there was plenty of that—but not on Amelia’s part. Nope, it was Mama who was in tears as we pulled away from the school. Amelia? She ran straight into the schoolyard with her teachers and classmates and never looked back. One of her teachers, seeing my obvious anxiety, was sweet enough to give me a call of reassurance. Mia was doing great, playing independently and was in good spirits. Such a relief to hear!

While I was thrilled she was doing so well, let’s just say that my eyes never strayed too far from the clock. Was she missing me? Calling for me at the door? At 4:30, it was time to pick her up. We get there and we don’t even get as much as a hello! In fact, she straight up refused to come with us. She was busy playing with this darling little blond boy. We had to stay until his mom came to pick him up and then little stinker followed him towards his car. So much for her desperately missing Mommy! :/

She stayed dry and used the potty like a pro. Absolutely NO problems. She had a blast, and I feel a lot better about her going again tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow I’ll even do something with my free time other than stay home, clutching my mobile phone, with my eyes firmly trained on the clock…

Without further ado, here’s our little schoolgirl!
